June Update
We are now looking forward to the month-long exhibition by the Lincolnshire Artists' Society starting on 11 June. This will be held in conjunction with the Hub, National Centre for Craft and Design who will be hosting an exhibition of the society's three-dimensional art while the Carre Gallery has the privilege of exhibiting the fine art.
The Hub is virtually opposite the Carre gallery so both elements can be easily seen together. The society has been established since 1906 and has a reputation for having amongst its members some of the most professional, and successful artists in Lincolnshire. The members work in a wide range of media and techniques and a broad variety of styles.
In August we are delighted to continue our annual open Summer Exhibition and Competition following from last year's successful debut.
The submission deadline is 07 August so now is the time to plan your entries. Each artist may submit up to three entries and, after selection, we look forward to an exhibition with broad appeal showcasing the wide-ranging talent that our county holds. Once again we have the support of Lincolnshire Pride Magazine who will be providing the artist, whose entry is judged best in show, with a feature article in the glossy up-market magazine.

Spring Update
The gallery has received a wash and brush up for the new season and the walls are now a crisp white. Lights and a timer have been installed in the Somersby Room so passers-by can view the gallery in the evening.
Our emphasis this year is to widen the range of work on view and for sale. The backbone of the gallery is the 2D paintings in all mediums and we have some quality artists booked. We also want to encourage first rate photographers and textile artists. We have already had The Contemporary Craft Network who, inspired by the gallery, produced 2D images in glass, tapestry, embroidery and felt. It gave the gallery a different aspect and was appreciated by the viewing public.
Over the next few months we have watercolour botanical art, photography, collage, painted and embroidered fabric, as well as an exciting four week exhibition of Fine Art by the Lincolnshire Artists Society.
Please note Windham Hime’s Retrospective is now to be shown in May, to make way in April for our first memorial exhibition in Windham’s name to be given by the gallery on a yearly basis. We are please to have invited Barry Bland, Lincolnshire born and bred and now an international photographer, to be our first recipient. He will be showing stunning animal portraits with an interesting story attached to the taking of them.

In memory of Windham Hime
Windham Hime, director and co-founder of the Carre Gallery died on December 28th 2009.
Many of the artists know of this already but we feel it necessary to let all our visitors to the website understand the significance of his influence in the field of art in Lincolnshire.
Windham was an artist and photographer for much of his life and during the last 11 years he lived and worked in Lincolnshire. As a freelance photographer he worked for various newspapers and magazines and he produced a photographic archive of Lincolnshire Farming at the Millennium for the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.
As an artist he held many exhibitions at the Carre Gallery, The Manor House, Alford and Ayscoughfee Hall, Spalding as well as other joint ventures. He was Art on the Map exhibitor and committee member for 2 years. He organised a Limited Edition Print Exhibition of local artists at Horncastle College and was instrumental in arranging an exhibition by Boston artists in their twin town, Laval, France. A painting of Windham’s was sent to Sleaford’s twin town, Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf, Germany. He also taught oil painting for beginners to adults at Ruddock’s of Lincoln.
Windham was a member of the Steering Group for EMARAN (East Midlands Art in Rural Areas Network). He liaised with Chris Heighton LCC Arts Officer, to create a working party to consolidate art and tourism within the county. The most important work in his mind lately was that of director of the Sleaford Gallery Arts Trust Ltd and the running of the Carre Gallery. His long term aim was to ensure the success of the Carre Gallery, which he helped to establish with Chris Hodgson, and to promote an interest in art and art appreciation for a wider audience, from children to adults. And to carry on painting!
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those artists, friends and family who made donations, in memory of Windham, to the Sleaford Arts Trust Ltd. These donations now add up to over £1000. We think this is a fitting tribute to Windham and one we are sure he’d have wished he thought of himself!
There will be a retrospective exhibition of Windham’s photography and painting sometime in April.

Carre Gallery in 2010
News from the gallery this year is exciting. We have a series of exhibitions throughout the first six months which break the boundaries for the gallery. Look for the dates and details to be announced soon.

November Update
We are now into our second year at the gallery and we are pleased that we are able to continue bringing you interesting and enjoyable exhibitions. Art lovers please note that, in these uncertain times, art work is still an affordable way of investing. Today’s painting for your enjoyment could be an heirloom in the future.
As you will know, the gallery is financed by the artists, the sponsors and a team of volunteers. One year on, we thank them, and all our visitors, for their continued support.
We still have room for more innovative exhibitions as well as the more traditional and are now booking well into next year. We welcome too, those individual pieces of work to show in our Somersby Display between exhibitions, at the moment only £2 per picture for at least a month in the gallery.
Now a plea for our local website visitors. We are currently looking for more volunteers to man the gallery for regular 3 hour stints. (The hours would be 10am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm.) We need a commitment for a period of time, say the next six months, so that we know the gallery can be kept open, throughout the year, every day of the week. We have our stalwart volunteers at present, who give us as much time as they are able but we need more like them. We welcome offers from artists, art lovers or people who just want to have a new interest. Please email if you are willing to help us.

September Update
Our Spring and Summer programme has been varied with work ranging from gesso panels, traditional landscapes, collage, abstract, portrait and photography.
We held a very exciting Summer Exhibition and Competition in July this year. The work from a variety of Lincolnshire artists was of a very high standard and we were pleased to have it on show for a fortnight. H.M. Lord Lieutenant Mr Tony Worth was the invited judge and the winner was Mr Robin Smith for his painting ‘Shifting Sands, Humber Estuary’. Robin’s prize was a three page article about his work in the prestigious Lincolnshire Pride magazine.
The last weeks of August saw an Open Children’s Workshop being held every day. All the children, and their parents, seemed to have a good time and all managed to complete at least one painting or drawing. Some sat for an hour or two and did a number of pieces, trying out all the different mediums available. We picked seven of the pictures to show the standard achieved and rewarded these children with a certificate and a small prize.
We intend to make both these items an annual event and have other special exhibitions and events planned in the future.
A life drawing group get together once a fortnight in our upstairs studio. This is not a teaching class but a group for artists who meet to improve their skills with a life model available. The group is organised by Mary Newman 01529 415272. Please contact her, if you would like to participate, and she will put you on the list and inform you if there is a vacancy.
Now we are open all the time, with our Somersby Display on between the major artists exhibitions, we are keen to meet more artists who may wish to exhibit just one or two pieces. If you are an artist, perhaps not yet ready to hold your own exhibition, or maybe you are committed elsewhere but have individual pieces you would like to show, please bring your work to the gallery for us to assess. It can then be hung in the general exhibition called the Somersby Display.
Please make sure you work is marked on the back with your full contact details and price and title, and bring it to the gallery when a major artist exhibition is not on. One of our volunteers will take it from you and the directors will see and agree to hang as soon as possible. There will be a small administration fee for this display and a commission charged once sold.
We would like you, art lovers and artists alike, to view the news pages from time to time where we will keep you up to date with all our plans in, hopefully, monthly bulletins.
